By Dawn Paduganan

Even as a little girl, I loved to stroll along and look in all the unique little shops…pressing my nose against the window to look at frosted cupcakes, crinkling the fabric of the pretty little yellow chiffon dress in my fingers, sitting on the floor of the bookstore flipping through those sturdy colorful pages of ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ in the children’s section, having a grown-up tea with my mom before we dashed off to get our fingers and toes painted at the salon for a special occasion. The whole experience of shopping locally and hanging out.

I guess I never really grew up…

I so thoroughly enjoy living in a pedestrian urban area where I can walk to where I want to shop and eat, where store owners know my name, know how I like my coffee, how I like my hair cut and styled, even suggest books and music they think I might like, carry just that piece of jewelry or clothing that is unique or unusual or reflects who I am. The pasta place that makes me my very own gluten-free pizza, just the way I like it, with the crazy chianti I like so much.

Now, as an adult, I can’t help but realize that these fun and funky locally owned stores are the cornerstone of our American economy. Small business owners who have a dream and want to realize it are creating the most jobs and helping retain an element of surprise and delight, of serendipity, that surrounds the shopping experience. And they are the most threatened.

To me, this is what Punchcard represents. It represents rewarding big and little girls like me for going to that special corner store, that concept shop, that big idea the little restaurant owner had, and keeps me coming back. In an age of high-tech, on-the-move, digitally-connected and constantly-on, local business struggles to compete from a technological perspective.

But Punchcard solves all that. Every consumer with a smart phone can simply take a picture of their receipt everywhere they shop and get rewarded. No extra cards to carry, no extra information to supply, no extra work for the merchant. To me, that is giving back. That’s helping carve out a space for the places I love to shop to be able to survive and thrive. That’s ensuring my little granddaughter will be able to enjoy the same experiences with me. I’m going to keep on punching….

PASADENA, Calif., Apr 11, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Punchcard, an Idealab company, announced today the introduction of Punchcard for Business, the company’s new business-side marketing solution that gives local merchants valuable insights into customer purchasing behavior, along with the ability to automatically push offers directly to consumers’ smart phones via the Punchcard Mobile App. Pioneering Online 2 Offline (O2O) consumer and merchant solutions in what has been called a trillion dollar market, Punchcard for Business gives local businesses a live link to customer mobile devices along with a way for local businesses to push relevant offers to consumers based on their past purchasing behavior. The result is that consumers receive targeted offers from local businesses that they love and local businesses can finally communicate with consumers in an automated fashion. This is especially important for local merchants as 15% of their customer base typically generates 60% or more of their profits. Punchcard’s loyalty and mobile marketing solution works for local businesses of all types, including specialty retailers, restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops and others.

Combined with the Punchcard Mobile App, Punchcard for Business gives merchants a personalized dashboard which provides rich customer data based on actual purchases. Gone are the days of the “one size fits all” offer as merchants now have the ability to push personalized offers such as: a percentage or dollar amount off of their next purchase, an incentive to tell their friends, a free item if they come back and purchase again this week, or an offer based on the customer’s past purchase behavior (i.e. “buy a sweater to go with those jeans you bought last week”).

“We have spoken to thousands of local businesses and hear the same comment over and over again: customer acquisition is expensive and, regardless of where they are advertising, they often don’t know if their marketing efforts are producing repeat purchases from their customers,” said Punchcard CEO Andy Steuer. “Punchcard for Business provides a way for those merchants to increase the revenue generated from these customers and shorten the consumer re-purchase cycle, while also gaining insights into which customers are their best customers and which customers need an incentive to come back more frequently.”

With the introduction of Punchcard For Business, Punchcard is taking it one step further by offering merchants insights into customer purchasing behavior via in-store analytics, combined with an automated mobile marketing solution that allows the local business to send highly targeted offers to customers and re-acquire and reward the ‘Right Customer’ on a cost effective basis. Consumers benefit as well by receiving valuable offers from businesses that they love.

“The lines between online and offline are blurring and we are at an inflection point in the market where consumers use their mobile phones several times an hour when they are shopping or eating at their favorite restaurants. Punchcard provides a way for consumers to get rewarded for being loyal customers, and for merchants to be able to re-acquire those customers on a more cost effective basis. We expect to see that the net result is consumers will increase their purchase frequency and purchase amount as a result of Punchcard for Business and, in this economy, that is exciting,” continued Steuer.

The Punchcard mobile app replaces the stacks of paper loyalty cards and rewards consumers with cash back from their favorite merchants. The process for achieving rewards is simple: Download the Punchcard app, called “Punchcard — Official” in the App Store and Android Market, and after visiting a business, simply take a photo of the receipt at the point of purchase after which Punchcard will verify your purchase so you can earn “punches” at the places you love to shop.

The “Punchcard Official” App is available now in the Apple App Store for iOS users and in the Android Market for Android users. Punchcard is currently available at more than 147,000 businesses in Southern California.

About Punchcard

Punchcard is a mobile engagement and loyalty network designed to give merchants an effective way to retain customers while rewarding shoppers for making frequent purchases at their favorite retailers.

We want the Punchcard experience to be seamless with your daily routine so you can get credit for the places you shop and eat at – wherever you are. That’s why we’re excited to tell you about some of the upcoming features that make it easier for you to save money at the places you already shop – and to find new places you’re bound to love as well!

Here’s a list of some of the things that are keeping the product team at Punchcard busy…

Register directly with Punchcard
Facebook may be popular but it’s not the only game in town. Punchcard will be allowing users to register directly without authenticating through a 3rd-party network. If you already use Punchcard with Facebook and want to switch to our internal authentication it’s not a problem. Just logout of Punchcard, provide your email address and photo and we will log you back in where you can access all of your cards and punches.

New vertical card layout
Those cards are too tiny! Yeah, we think so too. We hope you like our new vertical layout which is bigger, brighter and more colorful!

Getting social
Sometimes the mood hits us and we just want to spread the love. Share Punchcard with your friends to give and get free punches at your favorite places. Your friends will love you for it. And so will we!

It’s time to get rewarded – in more ways than one
Punchcard has always been about great rewards. However, we’re making it easier for merchants to win you over with better offers and more of them. Punching a card will still get you one step closer to cashing out – however, we’ll also be sure you tell you about the best offers in your immediate area too. You’ll be amazed at how much free stuff is lurking in the shops around you. All you have to do is punch.

Smarter navigation, cleaner interfaces and reliability
At Punchcard we sweat the small stuff too. With all of the bigger features on their way you can also be sure Punchcard is paying attention to the details that make collecting punches super fast and easy.

Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) February 22, 2012

Punchcard, an Idealab company, today launches a new mobile app that gives consumers a simple way to get rewards from the businesses they frequent most. Debuting in Southern California, Punchcard gives iPhone and Android users access to rewards for more than 147,000 local businesses from Santa Barbara to San Clemente to Palm Springs.

The process for achieving rewards is simple: Download the Punchcard app, called “Punchcard – Official” in the App Store and Android Market, and after visiting a business, simply take a photo of the receipt at the point of purchase after which Punchcard will verify your purchase so you can earn “punches” at the places you love to shop. After completing a punchcard at any business, the Punchcard user is entitled to a reward – in most cases, it’s cash back, but it can also be a free meal, free clothing, free haircut, or a gift card. The Punchcard app replaces the stacks of individual loyalty cards people have been expected to carry in their wallet and have available at the time of purchase.

“We’re thrilled to make the Punchcard app available to benefit both consumers and merchants,” said Punchcard CEO Andy Steuer. “Consumers get rewarded with cash back for shopping at the places they love. For local merchants, 15% of their customer base typically generates 60% or more of their profits. Loyal customers are the lifeblood to a local business, and Punchcard provides a way for those businesses to increase the revenue generated from these customers while shortening the consumer re-purchase cycle. The result is more revenue in a shorter period of time at lower costs. It’s a win-win for both the consumer and merchant.”

The “Punchcard Official” app is available now in the Apple App Store for iOS users and in the Android Market for Android users. Punchcard also plans to expand beyond Southern California into additional geographic areas in the coming months.

“I think Punchard is spot-on with the direction of the marketplace with regard to where loyalty programs are headed,” said Gordon Borrell, CEO of Borrell Associates, Inc., a leading research and consulting firm that tracks local advertising. “Punchcard incorporates the basic elements of social marketing with frequent customer rewards to broaden the opportunities for local businesses, and to grow revenues from their most important customer base. Andy Steuer is one of the brighter and most enthusiastic entrepreneurs when it comes to harnessing the power of digital media to the benefit of local merchants, and I’m expecting great things from this new company.”

Punchcard was founded by Andy Steuer, who has 20 years of leadership and entrepreneurial experience and has broad experience across a variety of small and large technology and entertainment companies. Prior to founding Punchcard, Andy was Founder and CEO of MerchEngines, an online marketing company that he founded in 2005 and grew through a successful acquisition by Deluxe Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, in 2009. Andy has also been on the founding team or worked at companies including, MusicNet, acquired by Real Networks; CNET, acquired by CBS, Infoseek, acquired by Disney, Xoom.com, acquired by NBC and ZeroDegrees, acquired by IAC, in addition to serving as a Managing Partner in an angel investment fund called Andojo.

Hi All,

WOW! What a week!!

Thanks for all of the tweets and follows over the past few days. It’s been great to see you all embrace us, and tell your friends about what we are doing here at Punchcard.

What are we doing here, you ask?

We are changing the world through what we call “Gratitude Marketing.”

We provide a way for consumers to get rewarded for being the awesome, loyal customers that we all are, and for merchants to be able to identify who their best customers are, and thank them for being their customers. This “thank you” can come in many forms.

Some merchants will push out incredible offers to their best customers’ cell phones (via the Punchcard app to) thank them.

These are exclusive offers that only Punchcard members get to see.

Offers include anything from a “free dessert when you come in again this week” or “birthday offers” where a business can give you something free for your birthday. Other companies create a “red carpet” offer where Punchcard customers don’t have to wait in line, or get a “chef’s dinner” served to your party in the kitchen where you can order anything on or off the menu, or get a “first look” at new merchandise, or special shopping hours. The offers are endless, and only available to Punchcard users via the Punchcard app.

Download the Android app here and the iOS app here.
